Hopeless Goals

by: Erica Clark

Kristinas  world of dancing and music is destroyed
from one fatal and destructive accident that changed
life for a lot of people forever. How does she explain
the truth to those who care most about her?

Hopeless Goals

Prologue-

She lay in the middle of the road, crying out for help
although her screams were only a secret you could hear
an inch away.  She peered into the foggy mist of smoke
and dust and felt warm tears of regret run down her
cheeks. Her curly-like hair of blonde was tangled up
into a trail of horror and regret. She lay still,
thinking about what had happened and what they had
done that night. Lives that were once full of hope,
love and laughter were now horror, deplore and
suffering. The night that had started out as a
fun-filled, cheerful one had ended it loss and
sadness. She couldnt  conceive what had happened and
tried to think of something else. The mist of smoke
flowed through the air and all she could see was the
accident of judgment day for her goals and life that
she once cared so much about.  She had to realize the
truth and call for someone and explain what went
wrong. The only problem for her was how do you tell
your best friend how one bad mistake could change the
life for several others?

Hopeless Goals- Chapter 1

"Ill be right down dad, Im just feeding Burly his
dinner." Kristina yelled down the stairs as she
hurried to feed her 5-year old golden retriever. She
emptied a can of Pedigree into a large, orange dog
bowl. "Eat up boy!" She quickly grabbed her pink
hand-bag and sped down the stairs where Steven, her
dad was waiting for her with a pair of used up, dirty
ballet slippers, a pink duffel bag and a smile full of
worry that she would be late again.

Kristina had been performing in the fine arts of
ballet for nine years, since she was 8-years old.
Kristina smiled and hugged her dad tightly and
whispered in his ear "I love you, and Ill be home
after 8 oclock,"

"Kristina darling, are you sure you want to proceed in
your dancing after you just recovered from your
bruised  leg?" Her dad said charmingly as he scratched
the top of his strawberry-blonde hair.

"Yeah dad, its been almost a month since then and my
leg feels absolutely perfect!" Kristina answered with
an abrupt tone.

"Okay than, see you at 8 oclock!" He called after her
as she ran out the door.

Kristina frantically ran over to her blue 1995 Jeep
Cherokee. After a minute of searching for the key to
open the car door she realized it was open all along.
She jumped into the car and threw her bag onto the
passengers seat when she heard a "Ouch!" She looked
over to the seat to find a startled boy she
recognized. It was Matt!

"Matt! How did you- when did, why are you here? I
thought you had practice in Trenton with the boys all
this week for the concert on the 15th!" Kristina
rapidly said with astonishment. She was so surprised
to see him sitting there.

"Well Krissy, Jackie our chorographer said that we
could all have the night off, so I decided to come to
my best, best friends house to see you and since I
knew you had dance I waited out here in the car for
you!"

"Ha-ha, well I sure am surprised. How long have you
been in here waiting?" She asked in concern.

"Oh, only for about an hour but Ive been pretty
occupied. I watched you while you took a shower, wow
is this a great view to see you!" Matt said in
sarcasm.

"Matt, youre gross and you sure havent changed a
bit!" She crawled over her seat to give the ever so
loving and cute Matt a long, passionate kiss. What
seemed like an hour of kissing only lasted for 5
minutes. She sat back in her seat and questioned him
about why he was wearing a dark-green Nsync concert
shirt that he bought for her when they went to the
concert 3 years earlier. He explained how he couldnt
find any clothes to practice in and he found that in
his closet, in the box of things to return to Krissy.

"Well, we better get going, I wouldnt want to be late
for dance another night. If Im late tonight Ill be
kicked off the team for nationals and you know I
couldnt live if dance was taken away from me!" She
explained in an ever so dramatic voice.

There sat Matt with a smile brightening up his face.
His soft, gentle brown eyes were steadily placed on
Kristina. He watched as she screamed out of her car
window "Can you drive a little faster?" Matt knew she
was worried about being late for practice so he went
close to her, kissed her cheek and whispered 3 words
that left Kristina speechless.

"Krissy, I love you." The tone of his voice was more
serious than she had ever heard him talk before. His
words were so brief and yet so meaningful she stopped
the car and started to cry. "Babe, why are you crying?
Arent you going to be late?" he questioned her as she
looked at him.

"Matt, do you know how many years I have waited for
you to say those words. I have loved you since we met
at the corner of Elm Street when we were seven. Ive
waited for you to say those words and now that you say
them, I know youve changed my life and I," Her voice
trailed off in her muffled tears.
Matt held her close to him and told her not to cry. He
meant what he said and he didnt want her to cry any
tears.

"Krissy, I too have always loved you. The real reason
I came tonight was to ask you a question that couldnt
be asked over the phone or computer but in person. I
know how stressed youve been lately but I couldnt
hold out on this question any longer." he held her
hands tightly and with his right hand he took a small,
beige box out of his clean-black leather jacket. He
looked up to her beautiful blue eyes and as a tear
fell from his eyes he asked her the question "Will,
will you marry me Kristina McManus?"

Krissy could feel the pressure that was placed on her
right now, but she knew the right thing to say and
exactly how to say it to him. She wiped his tear,
kissed his lips and whispered "Matt, my dear Matt, I
would love to marry you and I wouldnt say no in a
thousand years!" She smiled with her white teeth
flashing to Matt. She knew at that instant that her
life would be changed.

Matt smiled back at her as he placed the diamond ring
on her finger. He looked up to her face and said "You
are so beautiful Krissy, Im glad youre all mine!" He
giggled and kissed her neck. Krissy never did make it
to ballet class that night. She was "busy" in her car
with Matt.

Hopeless Goals- Chapter 2

Later that night, 2 patrol men pulled up towards the
stop where Krissy and Matt had stopped 3 hours
earlier. The first officer knocked on the window and
shined his flashlight into the car. All he could see
was the duffle bag and a pair of shoes. The 2nd
officer opened the door to find Krissy laying next to
Matt. The officers figured they were have intimate
moments but it was nothing but silent, safe sleeping.
Or so they thought. "Kids, you have to leave this
stop, its a hazard to other cars. Youre lights are
off and if there was ever a car out of control you
could be hit and killed in an instance." The 1st
patrol men complained.

"Yeah sure, sorry. Just give us a minute so we can be
on our way." Matt informed the cops that they had
gotten tired and they didnt want to keep trying
because they knew they could fall asleep at the wheel
and they didnt want that to happen. The police men
went on there way and so did Matt and Krissy.

"Krissy! Wake up Krissy its 11 oclock and you have
nationals today!" Her dad screamed up the stairs as
Krissy got out of her warm, cozy bed. Earlier that
morning Krissys dad had received a call from the
ballet school explaining how she never showed up for
practice and that she was disqualified but the dance
school wanted her to go and show her support for the
team. Krissy wasnt informed about the change until a
while after.

"Dad, did anyone call for me while I was sleeping?"
Krissy asked concerned that Matt had called after her
dad had forbidden her to see him because he had to do
his work with Dreamstreet and he thought Krissy was a
distraction towards his work.

"Yeah, you're out of nationals honey, I don't know why
you didn't make it to practice. You left with 20
minutes to spare, what were they used on?" He asked in
a concerned matter that made Krissy worry he was mad,
and her dad never got mad!

"Well, I saw Jessica and I hung out with her because
yes, you were right. My bruises still hurt. She told
me to do the routine and when I tried I twisted the
bone again so I just decided to spend the night at her
house. I was going to call you, but by the time we
drove there it was 11:30 and I figured you'd be at
work already. Sorry dad, I'm not worried about it
though. I'm getting kind of old for ballet!" Krissy
explained, kind of brushing away the subject.

"If thats your decision, than I definitely support it
all the way!" Implored her dad. He seemed upset and
worried that something had happened that night but he
couldnt be sure and suspect anything where suspicion
may not be needed. So he carried on with his day and
told her she didn't have to go to watch and she
didn't. Just like he thought.

'Hey Matt, its Krissy, how are you with last night?
I'm glad we were safe and I havent told my dad about
us yet. Will you come with me?' Krissy was trying to
figure out what to say to Matt when she called him.
"No! That doesnt good! Burly, can you help me out
with this? No, you cant your just a dog!"
At that minute her telephone rang ::ring, ring::
"Hello?"

"Hey Krissy Girl, hows it going?" Exclaimed an
unfamiliar voice from the other end of the phone. He
had a voice that she knew she had heard before but it
was hard to tell.

"Good, I guess. Who is this, Josh?" Krissy asked in a
wondrous voice. She had no idea who it was and the
only person she could think of was her old boyfriend
Josh Letterman.

"Nope, good guess Krissy, but its Chris Chris
Trousdale from Dream street. You remember dont you?
Im Matts best friend. Ha-ha, then again were all
best friends!" Chris said in an excited, rapid tone.

"Oh, Chris! Im sorry, its been so long. How have you
been?" Krissy implored, relieved it wasnt Josh after
all. She hadnt spoken to Chris in over a year since
her and Matt were really close.

"Dont worry about it doll, Ive been good. I called
because me and a few friends are going to the movies
on Friday and I was just wondering if you maybe wanted
to come just as friends of course, because we havent
hung out in a while!" Chris asked in a really nervous
voice. He secretly had a crush on Krissy when her
and Matt were going out, but now he just wants to ask
her out, and see if they are better as friends or
more.

"Umm, Friday night just as friends? Sure that seems
fine with me. I got to get going, Im supposed to meet
some friends somewhere so Ill see you Friday!" Krissy
said knowing she was going to be late to meet Matt at
the near down town café for breakfast.

"Okay, bye." Chris hung up the phone almost
immediately like someone was listening or something.
Krissy was curious but she didnt have time to worry
so she ran downstairs and ran right out of the door.
She didnt want to be late to meet Matt on there first
day out since they started seeing each other again.

Krissy walked into the café and looked around for Matt
but she couldnt see him anywhere. Then she felt a
light tap on her shoulder and when she turned around
to see who was there, Matt held a rose and had puppy
dog eyes and was wearing the shirt Krissy had bought
him last year on there 1 year anniversary. He looked
into her eyes and said Hello beautiful, youre right
on time!"

She tried to express to him how she felt that moment
but all she could say was "For me? Matt, you know
roses make me weak. You were always the affectionate
one so, thank you!"

"How was your sleep last night? You didnt think of me
too much did you?" Giggled Matt as he asked the
waitress for a Pancake Slam and a large glass of
minute-maid orange juice.

"How did you know?" Asked Krissy in an earnest way.

"How did I know what?" Matt posed in a shocking way
to the question she had asked.

"How did you know I thought about you, he-he!" Krissy
joked around, but she knew it wasnt a time for
laughing because Matt had a half smile and he had a
very momentous look on his voice so she took his hand
and told him to tell her what he was thinking about.

"Well, Krissy. The truth is, do you remember the other
night when I asked you to marry me?" Matt posed her
the question as if she had forgotten even though it
was only 2 nights earlier.

"Yes Matt, I remember. What do you think I am
stupid?" Asked Krissy in an abrupt tone because she
knew he wasnt too sure about it.

"Well, umm. I dont really know how to say this but, I
changed my mind. Its just too soon Krissy. We just
broke up and now were going to get married? I dont
know anymore." Matt exclaimed, kicking the café table.

"What!? Why not?" Krissy asked very, very mad.

"Because Kris, we are only 17 and its not like youre
pregnant so I need to be the father to support the
child, we are rushing into things and I dont think
its such a good idea. The other night I hadnt really
thought things through, can you honestly say you love
me?"

"Matt! I thought I knew you, but youre just another
fucking jerk!" Krissy got right up and walked out of
the café, slamming the door behind her.

"But Krissy, Krissy! Wait!" It was too late, she had
already been halfway walked the street by now. He
didnt know what to do, should he chase after her or
leave her alone until she decided to talk to her. He
finally made up his mind and jumped into his red 1997
Chevy and drove straight to her house.

Hopeless Goals-Chapter 3

The next morning Matt woke up to the loud buzzing
sound of his alarm clock. When he looked over at his
clock it said 7:50 a.m. He knew it was going to be
another long day at the studio practicing. He had so
many thoughts on his mind because the night before
while he was pulling into the driveway of Krissys
house, her mom came outside and told Matt that Krissy
had called earlier and told her she was going to spend
the night at a friends house.  He hopped out of bed
and ran his hands through his strawberry blonde hair.
He went into his bathroom and turned on the shower. He
put his hand into the shivering, cold water and waited
until it was a temperature he liked. He took off his
blue, striped Gap boxers and went into the shower.

Meanwhile back at Jesses house, Chris and Frankie were
looking through an old CD collection of Gregs while
Jesse was admiring himself in the mirror singing to
himself. "I miss you-miss you -miss you- I miss you
like crazy! Even more than words can say. I miss you
like crazy! Every minute of everyday. Girl Im so
down, when your loves not around. I miss you-miss you
-miss you- I miss you like crazy! NO!! I cant get the
last part right! Chris, come here for a second," Jesse
demanded to Chris as picked up his glass of orange
juice and gulped down the last few sips.

"What do you want man? Cant you see Im busy? If
youre gonna ask me if you look sexy my answer is
hell yes! Ha-ha-ha! " Chris answered in a jokingly
way. He got up from his bed made from a few blankets
on the floor next to Frankie and walked over to the
bathroom where Jesse was standing.

"Funny dude, but seriously I need some help with this
last verse. Every time I sing it, the last note always
seems too high! But when I try to do it low it sounds
screwed up because Im not an alto." Jesse uttered as
he sat down and put his head in is lap.

Greg walked into the bathroom and  began to argue with
Jesses problem. "Jesse, seriously it sounds fine! You
always think the last part sounds bad, you do the part
really good so dont let that stress you out. You have
enough to worry about like that huge zit growing on
your nose,"

"What?! Where is it? Greg, youre a jerk! Dont scare
me like that!" Jesse said in a relieved voice. He was
always so concerned about his complexion, if he got
one pimple he would freak. The guys always joked
around with him like that and every time he took it
seriously.
